Preparing for your Cloud Workloads with the CAF

The “Ready” phase of the Microsoft Cloud Adoption Framework is a crucial step in the cloud adoption journey. It involves preparing your organization for the cloud by creating a landing zone to host the workloads that you plan to build in or migrate to the cloud1. Here are the top 5 tips to help you get started:

  1. Understand Azure Landing Zones: Before adoption can begin, you need to create a landing zone to host your workloads. A landing zone helps you plan for and design an Azure deployment by conceptualizing a designated area for placement and integration of resources. There are two types of landing zones: platform landing zone and application landing zone1.
  2. Create a Landing Zone: Once you understand Azure landing zones, you can create a landing zone to host your workloads. A landing zone can be viewed through two lenses: reference architecture and reference implementation. Many landing zones offer multiple deployment options. The most common is a ready-made Infrastructure as Code (IaC) template referred to as a landing zone accelerator1.
  3. Bootstrap Your Environment: The first step in creating a landing zone is to bootstrap your environment. This involves creating subscriptions manually or programmatically, deploying Azure platform landing zone components, and deploying workload landing zone components1.
  4. Use Landing Zone Accelerators: Landing zone accelerators automate and accelerate the deployment of a reference implementation. Using IaC technology such as ARM, Bicep, Terraform, and others. They provide a prescriptive model for managing workload portfolios at scale, and consistency and governance across workload teams1.
  5. Consider Cloud Adoption Scenarios: The Cloud Adoption Framework provides guidance on cloud adoption scenarios and related accelerators. These scenarios help you shape your technology, business, and people strategies to achieve the best business outcomes.

Are you prepared for your cloud workload?
